Wondering how to make your beard grow fuller?
It is inherent in our human nature to want to emulate those we admire. You see your favorite safety (think Eric Weddle) and you think to yourself, “Dude, his beard is epic. I’m going to grow my beard like that.” In an instant, you can search hundreds of pictures of him with his beard in different stages of beard growth.
Something that bears mentioning here is what we mean by “fuller” or “fullness of a beard.” I do not mean length. It’s easy to figure out how to make your beard longer: let it grow. By fullness, I am referring to the actual amount of hairs you have in your beard and the thickness of your beard. A full, well-maintained beard is a magnificent thing.
Your beard’s fullness is determined by several things. First, beard fullness is affected by your genetics. How does your dad’s beard look? Your grandfather’s? When I was growing up, my dad only wore a mustache because that’s all he was allowed to have while working for the fire department. His dad has never had facial hair. Once my dad retired from the fire department, he grew a full goatee in addition to his mustache, but he never grew hair on the sides of his face. When I asked him about that, he said the hair on the side of his face has never grown. So how can I work with my genetics to meet my facial hair goals?
Boost your testosterone level
Alright, guys, let’s start with something biological. Your testosterone level affects pretty much every single aspect of your body from muscle mass to sex drive to hair growth. Your testosterone level affects your hair growth. Having a low testosterone level can have a number of effects on your body, all of which are negative. Side effects may include low sex drive, fatigue, depression, and suppressed facial hair growth.
There a lot of different ways to boost your testosterone level if you think this is the reason your beard is not at peak fullness. For now, I am going to focus on the natural ways of boosting your testosterone as opposed to testosterone supplements or patches.
First, get enough sleep. Yep, that’s right, man. You need to make sleep a priority. According to Men’s Fitness, lack of sleep can seriously dampen your testosterone levels. This may mean rearranging your schedule or eliminating staying up late to watch extra innings, overtime, or late night TV. You should shoot for 7-8 solid hours each night.
Next, you should work to maintain a healthy weight. According to Men’s Health, studies have shown that having excess fat can lower your testosterone level. If you have been carrying that spare tire around for awhile (belly fat and saddlebags, not an actual spare tire) that may be the reason your beard is not as full as you would like. Drop some weight, and your beard may very well grow in fuller.
One final natural way to increase your testosterone level is to get more active. You don’t have to go out right now and join a CrossFit gym. But you should consider increasing your activity level with some simple exercises that can do wonders for your testosterone. Not only is exercising good for your body and heart, but it can benefit your beard, and that’s always a good thing.
Trim it up right
For proper trimming, you need to invest in a quality trimmer and a good pair of scissors, not scissors from the kitchen. Facial hair is just like any other type of hair, it grows in different directions. It is important to keep your beard trimmed so that you can keep your hair all growing in the same direction. When your facial hair is going every direction possible, it will not appear to be as full as if the hair is all going in one direction. Keep your beard trimmed up to help it appear fuller. Here’s a simple set of instructions for you:
- Wash your beard thoroughly, either in the shower or in the sink.
- Allow your beard to dry (preferably air dry, but you can towel dry if time is an issue). The reason you want to trim when your hair is dry is that when your beard hair is wet, it will appear longer and fuller than it actually is, which can really screw up your trim.
- Comb your beard out. Make sure all the hair is going in the same direction.
- Use your beard trimmer and scissors to achieve the style and length that you desire.
Guys, you know this: growing a beard is not something that happens overnight. It is going to take some serious time for your beard to grow in like you want it to. All facial hair grows at different speeds, but generally, facial hair grows at about a half inch per month. You know what that means: it is going to take some time for your beard to come in like you want. In the beginning, your beard will most likely look patchy and unkempt.
If your sideburns grow really fast, but your chin hair grows slow, be patient. Remember, just like Rome wasn’t built in a day, your beard will not reach its maximum fullness and length in a day. It is going to take some time. Give your beard the patience it deserves.
Get your vitamins
Your diet is essential when it comes to the maintaining of your health. If you lack protein, you will experience weakness. Missing carbs, you will probably be more tired than if you were eating carbs. Just like your body needs all of its nutrients to run at peak performance, your beard needs certain nutrients to be the best that it can be. Biotin is an essential beard growth vitamin. Now, if you struggle to grow any facial hair, taking biotin is not going to turn you into a lumberjack. I can promise you that. But biotin has been proved to make hair healthier. A double-blind study showed that women who were struggling with hair loss who took a biotin supplement showed a significant increase in hair regrowth and thickening. You should be getting enough biotin in your regular diet, however. Check which foods naturally contain biotin here.
You can also replace your multivitamin with a beard growth supplement called Beard Grow XL. That’s right. There is a multivitamin designed specifically for beard growth. Beard Grow XL is a great product, but again, it is not a miracle worker. It boasts a completely natural, non-hormonal formula. The ingredients include citrus flavonoids, stearic acid, cellulose, silicon dioxide, and sodium–all natural ingredients. Beard Grow XL uses powerful antioxidants that promote healthy facial hair. It does not work overnight. Most men report taking the supplement for a couple of weeks before starting to notice results. This should not deter you. Many men have reported that Beard Grow XL has helped men fill in patchy spots in their beard, but it has also helped their beard grow softer and look healthier.
This is by no means an all inclusive how-to for how to grow a fuller beard. There are many different methods and theories for how to grow a fuller beard. Most likely, several methods will work for you, and several methods will not. There is not going to be a universal fix-all for how to make your beard grow in fuller. By all means, try these methods, but you should be warned that they may not work for you. Have you tried any of these? Or have you tried any different methods for making your beard grow in fuller? What have you tried that has worked for you? We would love to hear from you in the comments section.
